The University and the city of Ann Arbor have formed a joint Move-In Task Force to address issues concerning the fall term move-in process. The task force will collaborate with a Housing Division planning group to ensure a smooth procedure for opening of the residence halls Aug. 31.
The task force, chaired by Alan J. Levy, Housing Division director of public affairs and information, will address tactical issues concerning the influx of students, parents and visitors, such as traffic flow, parking, the effect of the move-in on city residents and employees, and the consequences of the weekend home football game.
“We’ve learned from our mistakes,” notes Jeff Ellis from the Office of the City Administrator. “Because of last year’s weekend football game, student move-in was scheduled mid-week, resulting in many unforeseeable problems for the U-M and the city.
“We can look at quite a number of improvements from last year, such as greater cooperation between the Ann Arbor Police and U-M Department of Public Safety.”
City departments represented on the task force include the Office of the City Administrator, Ann Arbor Police and the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority. U-M units include the Housing Division, Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, Office of the Medical Center Executive Director, University Parking Services and the Department of Public Safety.
Levy says that the Housing Division’s planning group will address student and campus issues, focusing primarily on internal operations and processes. Housing Division staff have studied other universities’ move-in activities and will review these before developing a final move-in program.
The planning group includes representatives from Dining Services, Residence Education, Conference Management & Hospitality Services, Public Affairs & Information, Housing Information, Housing Facilities, Housing Security and office managers.
Levy says the Housing Division welcomes input from members of the University community that might help mitigate problems or concerns that arose from fall 1993 move-in. Comments may be directed to Levy or Dana Fair at 747-3048.
