Help Museum of Natural History with mammoth exhibit

Last fall, a farmer near Chelsea uncovered a mammoth skeleton and donated it to U-M. The Museum of Natural History has begun planning a new exhibit to showcase these fossils, and seeks help from the public. Come to the museum between Jan. 29-Feb. 2 to share ideas for the mammoth display. A pop-up style exhibit workshop will feature photos of the bones, exhibit ideas and opportunities for visitors to leave comments and suggestions. Direct questions to Gene Dillenburg at dillenbe@umich.edu. For information about the new museum project, go to tinyurl.com/jcexkco.

UM-Dearborn plans Stamelos Gallery

William “Bill” Stamelos and Electra Stamelos, who died in 2007, traveled the world, creating and collecting art. Stamelos is honoring his wife’s legacy by enhancing UM-Dearborn’s art exhibition experience. UM-Dearborn plans to establish the William and Electra Stamelos Gallery at the Mardigian Library. Stamelos has donated more than $450,000 and committed the bulk of his estate to fund the initial gallery design and planning, and partial construction costs. Additional donors will be encouraged to provide further funds for construction.

Ann Arbor deer cull underway

The city of Ann Arbor began its plans to undertake a deer cull at 24 designated Ann Arbor city parks in the northeast area beginning Jan 2. While no U-M property is included, some park areas are adjacent to campus.

Some city parks will be closed from 4 p.m.-7 a.m. Monday-Friday, Jan. 2-March 1, to carry out the deer-management plan, according to the announcement. All parks will be open Saturdays and Sundays.

Signs will be posted at affected city park and nature area entrances to notify visitors of closures.

A few of the potential locations are adjacent, or nearby university property. The Ann Arbor Police Department will be in contact with the U-M Police Department during this time.

The city has contracted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services, whose marksmen will cull and remove up to 100 deer from designated city of Ann Arbor parks and nature areas.

All deer cull activities will be performed by highly experienced personnel who are specifically trained to conduct a cull in an urban setting with precision, accuracy and safety as top priorities.
