U-M teams with federal labs to study connected vehicles efficiency

The University of Michigan is working with two U.S. Department of Energy national laboratories to study whether connected vehicles that communicate with each other and automated vehicles could help people drive more efficiently. U-M, with Argonne National Laboratory and Idaho National Laboratory, won a three-year, $2.7 million grant from DOE to fund the research. U-M will recruit 500 Ann Arbor area volunteers to participate. Their personal vehicles will be equipped to collect energy consumption data and information on vehicle motion. Some vehicles could belong to fleet or commercial users.

Regents meeting set for Dec. 17

The Board of Regents will have its monthly meeting at 3 p.m. Dec. 17 in the Anderson Room, Michigan Union. To offer public comment at the meeting, sign up in advance at regents.umich.edu/meetings/publform.html. Public comments on agenda items will be taken prior to their consideration. Comments on nonagenda items will follow the regular business agenda. UM-Dearborn prepares to confer 50,000th degree at its commencement

At morning commencement ceremonies Dec. 19, the UM-Dearborn is expected to confer its 50,000th degree. “As we celebrate this milestone, we celebrate all our graduates and the impact they have had in southeast Michigan and throughout the world,” said Chancellor Daniel E. Little. Richard Bernstein, Michigan Supreme Court justice, will speak at 10 a.m. to graduates of the College of Business; College of Education, Health and Human Services; and College of Engineering and Computer Science. Eugene A. Gargaro Jr., chairman of the Detroit Institute of Arts’ board of directors, will speak at 3 p.m. to graduates of the College of Arts, Sciences and Letters.

Record print and email editions on hiatus over break

Dec. 14 will be the last issue of The University Record’s print edition for 2015, and the final daily email of the year will be sent Dec. 21. Major campus news that occurs during the winter break may be posted to the Record website at record.umich.edu. The Record email will resume Jan. 6, and the first print edition of the winter semester will be Jan. 11.

Bicentennial grant workshop scheduled

As part of the recently announced Bicentennial Activity Grant Program, the U-M Bicentennial Office is hosting informational workshops for those interested in applying for a grant. They are open to constituents including staff, faculty, students and alumni. The first is noon-1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Koessler Room at the Michigan League. U-M signs American Campuses Act on Climate Pledge

The University of Michigan has joined more than 200 universities and colleges in signing the American Campuses Act on Climate Pledge. The list includes all schools in the Ivy League and numerous public and private universities across more than 40 U.S. states that recognize the need for international action and pledge to accelerate the transition to low-carbon energy while enhancing sustainable practices on their campuses. The White House released a list of the signatories, demonstrating support for international climate action in advance of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris last week. A delegation of 10 U-M faculty and students was scheduled to attend.
