Apply for the Road Scholar Tour

U-M instructional, research and clinical track faculty are invited to apply by Nov. 30 for consideration to be part of 2016 Michigan Road Scholars Tour. The goal of the May 2-6 tour is to increase knowledge and understanding between the university and the people and communities of Michigan. It also demonstrates how U-M is connected to the entire state; cultivates an awareness among faculty of the state’s geographic, economic, cultural and political attributes; and encourages public service and research to address problems. U-M battery pioneer startup Sakti3 acquired by Dyson

Sakti3, a University of Michigan startup that pioneered a new battery platform, has been purchased by Dyson in a $90 million deal that follows an initial investment of $15 million earlier this year. Sakti3’s prototype solid-state battery cells have a high energy density, giving them the potential to increase the density of today’s most advanced liquid lithium ion batteries, while also being smaller, safer, more reliable and longer lasting.

Ergo Grant funds available to reduce workplace risks

MHealthy offers U-M departments and units up to $5,000 to purchase equipment or redesign work processes to reduce ergonomic risk factors. Any regular employee can submit an application if your work group regularly: Experiences physical discomfort due to manually lifting, pushing, pulling or transporting equipment or patients; Bends over, reaches up, or performs awkward, repetitive motion for several hours a work day; Experiences physical stress or discomfort due to work conditions. Grant applications are accepted year-round. Apply at MHealthy.umich.edu/ergo. Also, any employee can be nominated for an ERGO Hero Award, for implementing ergonomic solutions in the workplace.

Annual Blood Battle returns

The 34th annual Blood Battle through Nov. 25, pitting U-M against The Ohio State University to unite students, faculty, staff and the Ann Arbor community to save lives and extend the rivalry beyond the football field. Over the past 33 years, U-M has collected enough blood to potentially save more than 637,000 lives. Make an appointment to donate on the American Red Cross website, www.redcrossblood.org, using the sponsor code “goblue” to view donation sites in the Ann Arbor area.

Sustainability Town Hall to strengthen campus culture

U-M will host a town hall from 9-10:30 a.m. Nov. 5 to review initiatives, projects and programs that support the university’s sustainability goals. The event is in the Hatcher Graduate Library Gallery. President Mark Schlissel will share opening remarks. The entire campus community is encouraged to participate by sharing ideas and asking questions. The Office of Campus Sustainability is hosting the event.

Nominations sought for Goddard Power, Dumas awards

The Academic Women’s Caucus is accepting nominations for the Sarah Goddard Power and Rhetaugh Dumas Progress in Diversifying awards from the University Community. Nominations for the 2016 Academic Women’s Caucus Sarah Goddard Power Award are due Nov. 23. To qualify, a candidate should have made significant contributions to the development of the status of women at U-M in addition to demonstrating exceptional leadership, notable scholarship or significant professional accomplishments. Nominations for the 2016 Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award are due Nov. 23. The award recognizes outstanding institutional initiative in demonstrating notable progress by academic units in achieving ethnic/racial and gender diversity in the professor, clinical professor, research professor and research scientist faculty ladders/tracks. UMHHC among 50 greenest hospitals in America

U-M Hospitals and Health Centers have been recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review for practices that reduce waste and benefit the environment. They have been named one of the 50 greenest hospitals in America. The list recognizes top-performing health centers with policies and practices that reduce waste and benefit the environment.

Call for nominations for Distinguished University Innovator Award

The U-M Office of Research is seeking nominations for the 2016 Distinguished University Innovator Award, the university’s highest honor for faculty who have shown leadership in bringing new ideas to the marketplace. Nominees can include a faculty member of the tenured, tenure track or research faculty track, or a team of up to three such faculty members.  Details on the award criteria, the nomination and selection processes, and previous winners can be found at tinyurl.com/no9je97. Nominations are due Jan. 8 and the selection will be announced in February.
