Active U marks 20 years of encouraging U-M to move

Topics:

Active U, MHealthy’s 12-week physical activity challenge, celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, continuing the tradition of encouraging the U-M community to get moving during colder months.

Tens of thousands of Active U participants have logged more than 300 million exercise minutes since the program began in 2005.

Registration for the latest round of Active U is now open on the MHealthy Portal. Participants can sign up as an individual or join a team with co-workers, U-M friends and spouses/other qualified adults. All fitness levels and abilities are encouraged to join.

Active U is open to all faculty, staff, students, retirees and spouses/OQAs of active employees. The deadline to register is Feb. 3. Tracking of physical-activity minutes starts Jan. 20.

In Active U, all movement counts — walk, roll, shovel snow, stretch, lift weights or play with the kids or pets. It’s up to the participant how they meet their physical activity minutes goal.

This year’s program highlights include:

  • Active U T-shirts: Qualify for a 20th anniversary T-shirt by meeting the program’s completion requirements. Participants can also upgrade to other Active U items.
  • Easy logging: Manually log minutes on the portal or sync to an activity tracking device.
  • Active U Slack channel: Connect with other participants, find encouragement and share throw-back photos and memories from the last 20 years.
  • Swag Squad: Enter to win $25 gift cards by sharing photos and posting to Active U’s Slack Channel. In recognition of 20 years, participants are encouraged to incorporate “20” or Roman numeral “XX” in their photos.
  • Special downloads: Get a 20th anniversary Zoom background and e-signature.
  • Physical Activity Library on MiVideo: Access more than 100 videos in such categories as strength training, cardio, yoga and more.
  • Charity of choice: During Active U, participants have the option to donate to MHealthy’s Resource Coach Mini Grant program. The program offers support to U-M faculty and staff experiencing a financial crisis or other personal hardship.
