New board members for the University Musical Society were elected at the annual meeting of the UMS Board of Directors. The new members begin their appointments in September. Four new board members were elected to four-year terms, including Dr. Timothy R.B. Johnson, the Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children, and chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan since 1993. He is also an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, awarded for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education; professor of women’s studies; and research professor in the Center for Human Growth and Development.

The ISSLS Award, considered the top award in spine research, was given to a worldwide project initiated by the team led by Dr. Andrew J. Haig, active emeritus professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, with former postdoctoral scholar Christy Tomkins as first author. Presented at the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine meeting May 16-20 in Singapore. The project was called “Consensus on the clinical diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis: Results of an International Delphi Study.” Danielle Sandella, U-M research assistant, also was an author of the report.

The Distinguished Researcher Award from the American Association for Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine will be presented to Dr. Andrew J. Haig, active emeritus professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, during a meeting Sept. 14-17 in New Orleans. The Distinguished Researcher Award honors an AANEM member who has made continuous significant contributions to clinical neurophysiology research.
