Jerome Nriagu, professor emeritus of environmental chemistry, School of Public Health; and research professor emeritus, Center Human Growth and Development, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science degree June 13 by the University of Alberta for his outstanding contributions in environmental health sciences. Few scientists have achieved this distinction in his field. He is one of the most cited researchers in the world (his work has been cited over 22,400 times according to Google Scholar) in the field of environmental studies.

Derek R. Peterson, professor of history and Afroamerican and African studies, LSA, was named one of 20 Corresponding Fellows by the British Academy during its annual general meeting July 14. Corresponding Fellows are scholars outside the United Kingdom who have “attained high international standing in any of the branches of study which it is the object of the Academy to promote.” These fellows are selected from overseas universities in the United States, Australia, Spain and Germany.
