The Mother Earth News has named U-M faculty member Joseph Trumpey and his family one of four 2015 Homesteader of the Year families. The Trumpeys live off the grid in their hand-built straw bale home. They produce at least half of their own food by gardening, canning, freezing and raising animals for meat and eggs. They also sell wool, meat and eggs to family and friends. Trumpey is an associate professor of art in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, and associate professor of natural resources in the School of Natural Resources and Environment.

Stephen Schram

Stephen Schram, executive director and general manager of Michigan Radio, WUOM 91.7 FM at the University of Michigan, was among three directors recently elected by the Rotary Club of Ann Arbor. Schram will oversee the areas of public relations, publications, communications and social media. The work of these various committees ensures timely and professional internal and external communications to increase awareness of club activities. 

Secretary of State John Kerry recently congratulated U-M President Mark Schlissel for UM-Ann Arbor being one of this year’s Fulbright Program top producers, as awarded by the U.S. Department of State. Kerry wrote to Schlissel that on behalf of the State Department, the worldwide sponsor of the Fulbright Program, “I am pleased to acknowledge your success and to emphasize the importance the U.S. government places on international exchange programs, which are fundamental to understanding our place in the world, and relating to our neighbors in an increasingly globalized economy.”
