Michigan Photography’s Eric Bronson won Photographer of the Year for the second time, Austin Thomason won first place in the Photo Essay category and second place in Campus Environment, and Daryl Marshke took second place in Sports Action at the recent University Photographers’ Association of America banquet. This is the fifth time in nine years that a Michigan Photography photographer has taken the association’s top award. In the print competition, Bronson placed first in two categories, Sports Action and Science and Research. He also earned a second place and honorable mention in Sports Feature. The University of Michigan for the first time hosted the annual symposium, involving more than 115 university photographers from around the country.

U-M’s Jowei Chen, associate professor of political science, LSA, and Jonathan Rodden of Stanford University, won second place in the Common Cause’s inaugural Democracy Prize writing competition to identify the best “gerrymander standard.” They wrote “Cutting through the Thicket: Redistricting Simulations and the Detection of Partisan Gerrymanders.” It identifies a redistricting algorithm that can be used to distinguish partisan gerrymandering from a state legislature’s efforts to apply acceptable districting criteria, keep communities of interest together, and facilitate minority representation.

Elijah Kannatey-Asibu Jr., professor of mechanical engineering, College of Engineering, recently was awarded the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ Education Award during the organization’s 2015 International Honor Award & Scholarship Presentations Ceremony June 1 in Detroit. The awards given by SME are designed to recognize and bring attention to the impact being made in the areas of manufacturing technologies, processes, technical writing, education, research and management, as well as service to SME.

Matthew Reed, research professor, U-M Transportation Research Institute; research professor, Center for Ergonomics, CoE; and head of the UMTRI Biosciences Group, received a U.S. Government Special Award of Appreciation at the International Technical Conference on Enhanced Safety of Vehicles 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden, June 8-11. The International Technical Conference on Enhanced Safety of Vehicles is supported by the U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and many other participating governments across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific regions.
