Planning for the School of Music facility on North Campus began in September of 1952 as Eero Saarinen and Associates was hired as planning architects. Contingent partly on state financing, construction didn’t begin until September 1962, and the building was completed in May 1964 at 1100 Baits Ave. for nearly $4.2 million. The School of Music moved from 13 scattered campus locations into the new 110,000-square-foot building. —  From “The University of Michigan, An Encyclopedic Survey.”
