Extensive remodeling of the East Quadrangle residence hall at 701 E. University was authorized in April 1969 for a Residential College division of LSA. The concept of a Residential College developed through faculty committee studies begun in 1963. Associate Dean Burton Thuma was the first director and developed a comprehensive plan for education and facilities. — From “The University of Michigan: An Encyclopedic Survey.”
