Original Michigan Union

This home of Judge Thomas M. Cooley, 1851 State St., was renovated in 1906-07 and
opened as the first Michigan Union. In 1916 the house was razed to make way for a new

Martin Luther King Jr. should be thought of as an economist as much as a minister or
civil rights leader, economist and writer Julianne Malveaux said at the closing ceremony
of the Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium in 1993. Malveaux said King envisioned an
economic system that would move from predatory to compassionate capitalism. She said hate groups would be less likely to vent anger against people of color if they had greater economic opportunities. — From The University Record
