Robben W. Fleming arrived in January 1968 as ninth U-M president amidst brushfires of student unrest. As chancellor at the University of Wisconsin he had demonstrated a masterful ability to persuade divergent elements to preserve intellectual freedom without disruption. His demonstration of grace under pressure repeatedly helped U-M steer an effective course through a period of campus unrest. — From “The University of Michigan, An Encyclopedic Survey.”
