The Charles Baird Carillon housed in the Burton Memorial Tower was dedicated on Dec. 4, 1936, following tower construction. It was named for U-M President Marion Leroy Burton (president from 1920-25). The tower, constructed of a reinforced concrete shell and faced with limestone, cost approximately $250,000 and was paid for by contributions. — From The University of Michigan, An Encyclopedic Survey
