Old school: U-M in History

Old Main Hospital arch

The new Albert Kahn-designed University Hospital opened in 1925 as the largest university-owned hospital in the  United States. A decorative arch featuring carved stone images surrounded the main entrance. After a newer University Hospital opened in 1986, the old structure was demolished in 1989. Old Main’s arch currently is in storage. — President’s Advisory Committee on Public Art

The faculty responded with a proposal to create an Institute for Science and Technology, where graduate students might concentrate in basic research. The state funded a building for the institute in 1959 on North Campus. — U-M Encyclopedic Survey
