At the instigation of the Michigan Press Association, the Board of Regents agreed in 1954 to open their meetings, starting in September, to accredited news representatives. The understanding was there would be closed sessions to consider property purchases, confidential personnel reports and matters under security restriction. — From “The Making of the University of Michigan 1817-1992” by Howard H.
