“The most striking feature of the University is the broad and liberal spirit in which it does its work. Students are allowed the widest freedom consistent with sound scholarship in pursuing the studies of their choice … Women are admitted to all departments on equal terms with men; the doors of the University are open to all applicants who are properly qualified, from whatever part of the world they may come.” — From a July 1887 Harper’s Weekly article on U-M, recalled in “The Making of the University of Michigan 1817-1992” by Howard H. Peckham.
