“I have had a corking good time,” said Theodore Roosevelt, of his 1899 visit to Ann Arbor. On April 11 he spoke to more than 3,000 students at University Hall. It was eight months after the end of the Spanish-American War, where Roosevelt earned acclaim as leader of the Rough Riders, whom he praised in his talk. He challenged students to show a similar zeal for life. “I have small respect for the man who wants to avoid the painful shock of contact with the world as it is outside,” he said, according to news accounts. Roosevelt later camped at Waterman Gymnasium, where he shook hands with some 3,500 people.
