Arrest made in indecent exposure incidents near Oxford Housing

On March 9 the Department of Public Safety and Ann Arbor Police Department officers arrested a 30-year-old man in connection with several indecent exposure incidents near and on campus in late 2010.

Christopher Filipek, 30, who is not affiliated with the university, was arraigned March 10 on six counts — four counts with AAPD cases, two counts with DPS cases (at Oxford Housing) as well as a felony sentencing enhancement of indecent exposure by a sexually delinquent person. DPS Crime Alert #2010-16 from Nov. 23 has been canceled. Additional charges may be authorized as the investigation continues.

Two aggravated assaults reported

The university police took two reports of aggravated assault in February. Neither report involved an injury that required medical attention.

On Feb. 22 a staff person at the Shapiro Library reported to DPS that he observed a man with a knife acting distraught as the man exited the building. Another person told police that the man had pushed two people and may have brandished a knife while inside the library. Officers located the man outside, placed him under arrest and took him to U-M emergency room for psychological evaluation. He is a 34-year-old man not affiliated with the university. The case has been submitted to the prosecutor for authorization of charges.

Later that week, two campus visitors reported being hit by pellets, perhaps from a passing minivan, as the pedestrians crossed State Street to load a bus. The victims did not seek medical attention, returned to their hotel, and talked with an advisor for their group. Police were notified about an hour after the Feb. 27 incident. This is the second similar incident reported in the last month. On Jan. 29 two students told police they had been struck by pellets in separate incidents about five minutes apart. Both January incidents were near the South University business district.

Student sexually assaulted by acquaintance

A student told police Feb. 11 that she had been assaulted Jan. 15 in her Stockwell Hall room by an acquaintance after each of them returned to the hall from an off-campus party. She did not seek medical attention. The investigation is pending.

Student foils attempted purse snatcher

A student fought off a stranger Feb. 24 who was attempting to grab the student’s purse from her shoulder. The student told police that she had been walking along South Forest with another student and just had passed the Towsley Child Care Center, when an unknown man ran up behind them and tried to grab her purse. She fought the man off and succeeded in retaining her bag before the man fled. She was not injured. Officers, including a Washtenaw County Sheriff K9 unit, were unable to find the suspect. DPS issued a crime alert to notify the community.

Man kicks in Michigan League door

An unknown man kicked in a panel of an exterior Michigan League door Feb. 12 and then climbed through the small opening. Staff members reported that they had encountered the man, who they said appeared to be very intoxicated, as he walked through the building. The man was described as a white male, 18-25 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall, slim build, about 175 pounds, with medium-length wavy black or brown hair, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, medium-blue-colored straight-leg jeans and white gym shoes. Police investigated several leads, but could not identify the man. The case has been closed.

Van reported stolen from near MSRB

A staff person told police Feb. 6 that her Chrysler Town and Country minivan had been stolen from a parking spot along West Medical Center Drive. She reported that she had parked the vehicle the previous day, and when she returned to the spot, her van was gone. The van was found that day in Detroit, but was destroyed by fire.

Paper burned on WQ bulletin board

A paper posted on a second floor bulletin board in West Quad was found burned in early February. The bulletin board also was charred. Residents and staff told DPS that the board probably was damaged around Feb. 8. There had been no reported fires or injuries around that date.
