In keeping with the dictates of an emergency federal law that allowed President Jimmy Carter to increase energy conservation measures, the university’s Energy Management Office announced thermostats in campus buildings would be set at 65 degrees. The temperature would not affect residential areas such as dormitories, health care facilities where treatment is given, or areas where lowered thermostats could damage material or processes. Today, the university’s Planet Blue energy savings initiative encourages a range of utility conservation measures and increased recycling on campus. — UM News (temporary name of The University Record)
