This week in history (15 years ago)

President James Duderstadt, president from 1988-96, announced that he would retire from the presidency the following year and return to the faculty. Duderstadt said he was pleased that national rankings of U-M’s academic programs were at a high peak, and that the university had attained the highest representation of people of color and women among students, faculty and staff in its history. Duderstadt, who remains on the faculty, was succeeded by Homer Neal (interim) in 1996; Lee Bollinger from 1996-2001; B. Joseph White (interim) 2002; and Mary Sue Coleman, the current president, in 2002.
