Design approved for MMPEI construction
The Board of Regents approved the schematic design for the planned renovation and addition to the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Laboratory on North Campus. The renovation of 10,000 gross square feet will provide state-of-the-art laboratory space for energy-related research for the Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute, and the 10,000-gross-square-foot addition will provide space for the institute’s administrative functions. The $11.1 million project is being funded from investment proceeds, the Office of the Vice President for Research and the College of Engineering. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2013.
New faculty/student studios for School of Art & Design
Approximately 33,000 gross square feet of the Auxiliary Services Building will be renovated to create new studios for faculty and graduate student studios for the School of Art & Design on North Campus. Consolidating the studios, currently located in two leased locations off-campus, will allow greater collaboration and increase operating efficiencies. The $4.9 million project, funded by investment proceeds, is scheduled to be completed next summer.
Elevator replacement planned at South Quad
A freight elevator servicing three floors at the South Quadrangle residence hall will be replaced with an elevator useable for both freight and passengers servicing nine floors. Housing resources will fund the $1.15 million project that is scheduled to be completed next summer.

Retirements
Steven Althoen, professor of mathematics education, School of Education and Human Services, U-M-Flint, retired from active faculty status May 31. Althoen joined the university in 1975. He wrote more than six textbooks, 25 refereed journal articles and more than 30 presentations. He served as chair of the mathematics department from 1985-89, and was chair of the Committee on Assessment, Accreditation and Strategic Planning from 1999-2010. Althoen was a reviewer and referee for several prestigious mathematics journals, and served as co-editor of the Classroom Capsules Section of the College Mathematics Journal. Among his honors are the UM-Flint Faculty Achievement Award for Scholarly or Creative Achievement (1990).
Dr. Caroline Blane, professor of radiology in the Medical School, will retire from active faculty status on Oct. 5. She joined the university in 1980. Blane’s research interests are in pediatric radiology and medical student education, areas in which she has more than 90 publications and more than 60 national or international presentations to her credit. She served as an examiner for the American Board of Radiology from 1993-2006 and again in 2009, was on the Program Committee for the Society for Pediatric Radiology from 1992-95, and was named a fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1999. In the Department of Radiology, she chaired the Committee on Medical Student Education from 1980-90 and 1993-95, served on the Senate Assembly from 1986-90 and received the Excellence in Teaching Award presented by radiology residents in 2002.
Dr. Robert Hensinger, William S. Smith Collegiate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and professor of orthopaedic surgery in the Medical School, effective Aug. 31. He joined the faculty in 1974. As a specialist in pediatric cervical spine conditions and developmental dysplasia of the hip, Hensinger built a strong program in pediatric orthopaedics at Michigan. He has authored 142 publications and 12 books, and after having served as chief of pediatric orthopaedics in the Medical School for several years he was named head (1996) of the Section of Orthopaedic Surgery. Upon the establishment of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2001, he was appointed as the first chair, and was instrumental in the expansion and development of the department. He was elected president of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (1985-86), the Scoliosis Research Society (1988-89) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (1992-93), all while working as a full-time clinician.
James Kulik, director and research scientist, Office of Evaluations & Examinations, effective June 30. He joined the university in 1969 as a lecturer in psychology and research associate. Kulik is known for his contributions to the development of meta-analytic methods for statistically analyzing research findings. His work has resulted in more than 150 publications, including books, journal articles and presentations at scientific meetings. Thirty years ago he developed the university’s first computer-based teaching evaluation system, a precursor to the system which now provides student feedback on more than 17,000 classes each year. In 1992 he received the Harold E. Mitzel Award for Meritorious Contribution to Educational Practice through Research from the Journal of Educational Research.
Simon Levine, professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Medical School, and associate professor of biomedical engineering, CoE, effective Aug. 31. He joined the faculty in 1983. Levine’s research has focused primarily on brain computer interfaces for the operation of assistive technology. He has become a leader in this field nationally and internationally, publishing 43 peer-reviewed papers, giving more than 90 invited presentations, and holding five United States patents and copyrights, independently or with others. Levine served on the board of the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America from 1995-2000, has been a reviewer for many scientific journals and a member of the editorial boards of Assislive Technology and Rehabilitation Report. He has served as a grant reviewer for the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the U.S. Department of Education Rehabilitation Services Administration. Levine was course director and founder of classes in both biomedical engineering and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
N. Harris McClamroch, professor of aerospace engineering and professor of electrical engineering and computer science, CoE, effective May 31. He joined the faculty in 1967. McClamroch’s research and teaching interests included aircraft flight dynamics and control, spacecraft attitude dynamics and control, robotics, manufacturing, wheeled vehicles and civil structures. McClamroch has published more than 250 articles and mentored 27 doctoral students. He chaired the Department of Aerospace Engineering from 1992-95, has served on numerous departmental, college, and universitywide committees, and served as chair of the Senate Advisory Committee on University Affairs in 1987-88. McClamroch was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Third Millennium Medal in 2000.
Shirley Verrett, James Earl Jones Distinguished University Professor of Music and professor of music (voice) in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, effective May 31. Verrett joined U-M’s faculty as professor of music (voice) in 1996, following a successful career in opera, in which she performed at the world’s leading opera houses and on network TV. In 2003 Verrett published “I Never Walked Alone,” a memoir of her trail-blazing experiences as an African-American woman breaking into the classical music world. In recognition of the excellence she embodied in her teaching as well as her singing, Verrett received the Harold Haugh Award for Excellence in Studio Teaching in 2008-09.
