This week in history (five years ago)

President Mary Sue Coleman announced a significant expansion of the university’s efforts in stem cell science with the creation of a new interdisciplinary center for stem cell biology research, to be based at the Life Sciences Institute. It was announced that The Center for Stem Cell Biology would be established with $10.5 million from the Medical School, Life Sciences Institute, and the Molecular and Behavioral Neuroscience Institute. Today the center is a vital hub for stem cell research. The main goal is to determine the fundamental mechanisms that regulate stem cell function. That knowledge, in turn, provides new insights into the origins of disease and suggests new approaches to disease treatment.
