The following items were approved by the Board of Regents at its July 15 meeting.
Design for addition to ISR approved
The Board of Regents approved the schematic design for the planned addition to the Institute for Social Research. The four-story addition will add approximately 44,700 gross square feet of space to the ISR facility to support its large and growing externally funded research programs. The $23 million project is being funded by an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 grant from the National Institutes of Health combined with resources from the Office of the Provost and the Institute for Social Research. Construction is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2013.
Crisler Arena renovation design approved
The design for the renovation of Crisler Arena was approved, including new seating in the lower bowl, relocated and widened aisles with handrails, and new seating meeting the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The project also will update the arena’s infrastructure, including a new roof and upgrades to the electrical and life safety systems. The $20 million project is being funded by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and is scheduled to be completed in the winter of 2012.

Regent meeting schedule amended
The Board of Regents approved changes to its 2010 meeting schedule. The October meeting will now take place Oct. 14 in Ann Arbor, and the Nov. 18 meeting will take place at the Flint campus.
Regent committee members named
The Board of Regents announced changes in the membership of three standing committees.
The Finance, Audit and Investment Committee, which focuses on the university’s internal controls, financial reporting, investment policies and practices, will include Regents Katherine White (chair), S. Martin Taylor and Olivia Maynard.
The Personnel, Compensation and Governance Committee assists the board in evaluating the performance of and determining the appropriate compensation for the president, and advises the president on performance and compensation for executive officers. Its new committee members are Regents Andrew Richner (chair) and Denise Ilitch.
The Health Affairs Committee, approved during the June 17 meeting, reviews and reports to the regents on matters concerning the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers. Members are Regents Laurence Deitch (chair), Andrea Fischer Newman and Julia Donovan Darlow.
U-M to assume responsibility for computing center
The Board of Regents approved agreements that will allow the university to assume 100 percent responsibility for the Michigan Academic Computing Center, housed in the Michigan Information Technology Center building at 1000 Oakbrook.
MITC has had a 15 percent stake in the computing center and had licensed its 15 percent portion of the computing center capacity to other entities.
The university’s decision to purchase the remaining assets of the insolvent MITC, assures the uninterrupted operation of the computing center, said Laura Patterson, the U-M’s chief information officer.

Retirements
Donna Algase, Josephine Sana Collegiate Professor of Nursing and professor of nursing in the School of Nursing, effective May 31. Algase joined the university in 1989. Her scholarship has focused on the study of cognitively impaired individuals, particularly those with Alzheimer’s disease. An accomplished researcher with more than $11 million in total funding over her career, she is acknowledged as one of the foremost scientists in the field of wandering behavior as a consequence of dementia and care of the frail elderly. A widely published writer, The Sigma Theta Tau Rho Chapter gave her its Outstanding Research Award in 2004 and Education Award in 2006. She also is the editor of Research and Theory for Nursing Practice.
Dr. Mila Blaivas, clinical associate professor of pathology in the Medical School, will retire from active faculty status on July 31. Dr. Blaivas joined the university in 1981 and collaborated on a number of research programs, including projects in the Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, and she has been a co-investigator on research funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. Her bibliography includes more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed journals. She was an instructor for the Neuropathology Basic Science course for second-year medical students for more than 20 years, and received the Resident Teaching Award in 1988 and 1998.
Dr. Sharon Brooks, professor of dentistry, School of Dentistry and associate professor of oral and maxillofacial radiology, Department of Radiology, Medical School, will retire from active faculty status on Aug. 31. She joined the university in 1973, and for much of her tenure at the School of Dentistry was the only oral and maxillofacial radiologist, in charge of radiology education for dental and dental hygiene students and served as the radiation safety officer for the School of Dentistry. Among other accomplishments, she initiated a series of small group radiology seminars that significantly improved students’ ability to interpret radiographs. She also established a radiology practice within the school that draws patients from around the state. Dr. Brooks served as president of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (2001-03) and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (2008) and is the editor of the international journal Dentomaxillofacial Radiology.
Gordon Crippen, professor of pharmaceutical chemistry in the College of Pharmacy, effective June 30. He joined the university in 1986. An internationally renowned theoretical chemist, Crippen pioneered the application of distance geometry to chemical systems. His work consists of devising new algorithms to solve problems associated with chemical structure and creating the computer programs that use these algorithms to analyze experimental results and make new predictions. A main focus of his research involved deducing a receptor site’s structure and energetics of interaction with drug molecules given specific binding data for a series of compounds to aid in the discovery and development of new drugs. Crippen is also known as an effective educator, particularly at the graduate level.
Dr. Joseph Fantone III, Godfrey D. Stobbe Professor of Pathology Education, professor of pathology, associate dean for medical education and director of the anatomic pathology division in the Medical School, effective May 31. He joined the university in 1980. Under his leadership, the residency training program was expanded to include fellowships in blood bank and transfusion, cytopathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, molecular genetic pathology and surgical pathology. In 2003 one of four pathology education scholarships, providing tuition for four years of medical school, was named in his honor. As associate dean of the Medical School, he oversaw the successful implementation of a new curriculum for medical students. Fantone received the National Board of Medical Examiners’ Edithe J. Levit Distinguished Service Award in 2008.
Dr. Stephen Ramsburgh, clinical assistant professor of pathology in the Medical School, effective June 30. He joined the university in 1977 and has received numerous teaching awards, including the Kraft-DeWeese Award (1991), presented annually to honor those who dedicate themselves to the development and education of surgical residents (renamed Kraft-DeWeese-Rasmburgh Award in 1994), the Department of Pathology Resident Teaching Award (2000, 2003), and the Golden Apple Award (American Medical Student Association, U-M, 2006). In 2007 Ramsburgh was named “Legendary Professor” by the Medical School Class of 2010. He also has been an active member of professional societies, including service as president of the A. James French Society of Pathologists (2006-08) and has published a range of writings including two books.
