Lab renovations planned at Gerstacker
Approximately 6,000 gross square feet of the Carl A. Gerstacker Building will be renovated to create a state-of-the-art laboratory for research using molecular beam epitaxy, the procedure used to design and manufacture modern semiconductors, photovoltaics and other devices. The $1.7 million project will be funded from College of Engineering resources and is scheduled to be completed next spring.
Burton Tower to undergo exterior, bell tower repairs
A $1.6 million infrastructure repair project is planned to repair damaged and displaced stonework and install new metal flashings on the exterior of the Burton Memorial Tower, and make necessary repairs to the bell chamber, including the steel structure that supports the carillon bells. General Fund resources will fund the project, which is scheduled to be completed next fall.

Robert A. Bender, professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology in LSA, effective May 31. Bender joined the faculty in 1978. His research focused on the regulation of microbial nitrogen metabolism. His work yielded more than 60 research publications, earned him fellowships from the American Cancer Society and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and was director of the graduate program in cell and molecular biology from 1992-96. He was a founding faculty member of the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology when it was established in 2001 and served the department as associate chair for undergraduate studies from 2005-08.
Edwin Curley, James B. and Grace J. Nelson Professor of Philosophy and professor of philosophy, LSA, effective May 31. Curley, who joined the faculty in 1993, is a prolific writer best known for his work on Spinoza. Curley taught undergraduate and graduate courses, graduate seminars on the history of religious toleration, and a popular undergraduate course on the philosophy of religion. He is a past president of the American Philosophical Association, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a recipient of several fellowships.
David F. Dolan, research associate professor in the Kresge Hearing Research Institute, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Medical School, effective June 30. Dolan joined the faculty in 1986. His research to define the normal mechanisms involved in sensory transduction of hearing, fundamental to understanding the causes of hearing loss and other conditions, resulted in 65 journal publications, 11 book chapters and 137 abstract presentations. His research on efferent effects on cochlear physiology improved understanding of how signals returning from the brain help to fine tune sound processing in the inner ear.
Dr. David Schteingart, professor of internal medicine, Medical School, effective June 30. Schteingart joined the faculty in 1963. He widely is regarded for his expertise in the areas of Cushing’s Syndrome, adrenal cancer and obesity; he has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles and 35 book chapters on these topics. Schteingart served as director of the Interdisciplinary Program for the Rehabilitation of Obese Patients from 1970-2003, director of the Adrenal Cancer Research Program from 1993-2005, associate director of the General Clinical Research Center from 1998-2007, and director of the Training Programs in Clinical Research 1999-2007.
Charles Yocum, the Alfred S. Sussman Distinguished University Professor of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, professor of molecular, cellular and developmental biology, and professor of chemistry, LSA, effective May 31. Yocum joined the faculty in 1973. His research in molecular bioenergetics served as the basis for numerous advancements in understanding of the structure and operation of the photosynthetic apparatus. Yocum chaired the Department of Biology from 1985-91, chaired the committee that formulated the current biochemistry concentration and was an undergraduate concentration advisor. He received honors including the Henry Russel Award and the Margaret and Herbert Sokol Faculty Award in the Sciences.
