Twenty faculty members will be recognized for their teaching, research, service and creative activities at a reception and banquet tonight (Oct. 3) at the Michigan League.
Five will receive the Amoco Foundation Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes “demonstrated excellence in instruction at the undergraduate level.”
The award, which carries a $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Sabine G. MacCormack, the Alice Freeman Palmer Professor of History and professor of classical studies; Lawrence B. Radine, U-M-Dearborn associate professor of sociology; Stephen H. Sumida, associate professor of English and of American culture; Herbert G. Winful, the Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of electrical engineering and computer science; and Jens C. Zorn, professor of physics.
The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, which carries a $1,500 stipend and recognizes “extraordinary achievement in teaching, research, creative work in the arts, public service and other activities that have brought the University distinction,” will be presented to five people.
They are: Richard Crawford, professor of music; Stephen S. Easter Jr., professor of biology; Albert B. Schultz, the Vennema Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics and research scientist, Institute of Gerontology; John W. Shy, professor of history; and Edward E. Smith, professor of psychology and faculty associate, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research.
Faculty Recognition Awards honor faculty for their “contributions to the University through significant achievement in research and other scholarly activities, excellence as a teacher and counselor and/or distinguished participation in University service activities.”
The award, which carries a $1,000
stipend, will be presented to five individuals:
Nicholas B. Dirks, professor of history and director of the Center for South and Southeast Asian Studies; David R. Engelke, associate professor of biological chemistry; June M. Howard, associate professor of English, of women’s studies and of American culture; Linda P.B. Katehi, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science; and Kathryn W. Tosney, associate professor of biology.
The Regents Award for Distinguished Public Service, which carries a $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Barry N. Checkoway, professor of
social work.
The University Research Scientist Award will be presented to Daniel J. Goldman, associate research scientist and associate professor of biological chemistry. It carries a $1,000 stipend.
Tetsufumi Ueda, research scientist at the Mental Health Research Institute and professor of pharmacology, will receive the University Senior Research Scientist Lectureship, which carries a $1,500 stipend.
The U-M Press Book Award, which carries a $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Raymond C. Kelly, professor of anthropology.
Peggie J. Hollingsworth, assistant research scientist in pharmacology and in environmental and industrial health, will receive the Distinguished Faculty Governance Award, which carries a $500 stipend.
