16 honored for teaching, research , service, creative activities

Sixteen faculty members will be recognized for their teaching, research, service and creative activities at a reception and banquet tonight (Oct. 4).

Two will receive the Amoco Foundation Faculty Teaching Award, which recognizes “demonstrated excellence in instruction at the undergraduate level.”

The award, which carries a $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Jean P. Krisch, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and associate chair, Department of Physics, and Patricia Smith Yaeger, associate professor of English and of women’s studies.

The Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, which carries a $1,500 stipend and recognizes “extraordinary achievement in teaching, research, creative work in the arts, public service and other activities that have brought the University distinction,” will be presented to five people.

They are: George Bornstein, professor of English; Dimitri N. Coucouvanis, professor of chemistry; Martin E. Katz, professor of music; Hazel Rose Markus, the Helen Peak Professor of Psychology and research scientist, Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research; and Miriam H. Meisler, professor of human genetics.

Faculty Recognition Awards honor faculty for their “contributions to the University through significant achievements in research and other scholarly activities, excellence as a teacher and counselor and/or distinguished participation in University service activities.”

The award carries a $1,000 stipend and will be presented to four individuals:

Anita Norich, associate professor of English and of Judaic studies and director, Undergraduate Studies, Department of English; Vincent L. Pecoraro, professor of chemistry; Noel C. Perkins, associate professor of mechanical engineering and applied mechanics; and Michael D. Uhler, associate professor of biochemistry, associate research scientist, Mental Health Research Institute, and associate director, Neuroscience Program.

The Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service, which carries a $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Josef M. Miller, professor of otorhinolaryngology and director, Kresge Hearing Research Institute.

The University Research Scientist Award will be presented to Robert C. Ball, associate research scientist, Department of Physics. It carries a $1,000 stipend.

F. Thomas Juster, professor of economics and research scientist, Survey Research Center, Institute for Social Research, will receive the University Research Scientist Lectureship, which carries a $1,500 stipend.

The U-M Press Book Award, which carries at $1,000 stipend, will be presented to Richard W. Bailey, professor of English, for “Images of English: A Cultural History of the Language.”

Psychology Prof. Donald R. Brown will receive the Distinguished Faculty Governance Award, which carries a $500 stipend. He also is director and research scientist, Center for Research on Learning and Teaching and co-director of the Inteflex Program.
