Police seek suspect in unarmed robbery

Officers continue to search for suspects in an Aug. 20 unarmed robbery near the Michigan Union. A 25-year-old Ypsilanti man told officers from the Department of Public Safety (DPS) he was approached by three unknown men about 1:20 a.m. as he walked near the union. One suspect reportedly began punching the victim, a U-M staff member, in the face, while a second suspect attempted to hold the victim. A third suspect was in the area but not directly involved in the assault. After the victim lost consciousness, the first suspect reportedly rifled through the victim’s pockets and stole a wallet and keys. All three suspects fled toward State Street. The victim refused medical treatment.

DPS officers have identified a possible suspect and will be seeking charges against a 15-year-old Ann Arbor youth. The other two suspects, estimated to be 18 or 19 years old, are described as a Black male with dark complexion, 5 feet 11 inches and 140 pounds, last seen wearing a black, sleeveless shirt and blue denim shorts; and a white male with medium complexion, last seen wearing a black T-shirt, blue denim shorts and riding a mountain bike. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact DPS at 763-1131 or U-M’s anonymous tip line at (800) 863-1355.

Student punched near Diag

A 21-year-old Bloomfield Hills student reported to DPS Aug. 20 that he had been punched in the nose by an unknown man as he walked near the north side of Mason Hall. The assault reportedly occurred around 1:20 a.m. Additional details are sketchy.

Two from Arbor Heights arrested

Two residents of Arbor Heights Center—a low-security, youth detention facility on Washington Heights—have been charged with felonious assault and sexual misconduct in connection with incidents in July and early August. Center officials contacted DPS Aug. 7 after learning that one resident recently had attacked another resident. After a DPS investigation, a 15-year-old was charged with felonious assault in connection with cutting an 18-year-old on the back of her neck with scissors.

The younger girl reportedly lashed out after observing the older girl kissing a third resident. The 18-year-old also was charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct because the younger girl was not old enough to legally give consent to sexual activities. The younger girl was transferred to a youth detention facility in Berrien County and awaits a juvenile hearing. The older girl is lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail awaiting her circuit court pretrial Sept. 21.

Vehicle stolen from structure, shell later recovered

The frame and outside shell of a U-M staff member’s car was found Aug. 10 in Detroit after it reportedly was stolen Aug. 4 from the Taubman Health Center parking structure. The 2000 Saturn sedan was found with a punched ignition, but without its doors, engine, transmission, interior equipment and wheels.
