Traffic around campus will be impacted this week as three campus streets and a parking lot will be reduced due to construction activities. In addition a new pedestrian bridge across Washtenaw will be opened.
Pedestrian bridge
The new pedestrian bridge across Washtenaw Avenue that will link the central and medical campuses is scheduled to open Sept. 15. A noon ribbon-tying ceremony will celebrate the opening of the new link that includes an elevated walkway through the Palmer Drive development. Questions about the event may be directed to Karl Bates, communications director of the Life Sciences Institute, at (734) 647-1842 or [email protected].
Catherine Street reduction
A new utility tunnel and duct bank are being installed along the north side of Catherine Street. Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times along Catherine, though it will be shifted to the southern lanes. This project earlier was announced to have begun in mid-August, but the start date was changed to Sept. 11.
The north sidewalk will be closed during the five-month project. Pedestrians are encouraged to travel to and from the parking structure via the elevated walkway over Glen Avenue. The Catherine Street entrance to the Glen Avenue parking structure will remain open, though drivers entering the parking structure are encouraged to use the entrance on Glen Avenue to avoid the construction activity along Catherine.
As the project progresses east along Catherine, construction activity will be performed underground in order to keep the intersection of Catherine and Glen open.
Questions may be directed to Dave Sprow, Plant Extension project manager, at (734) 936-2672 or [email protected].
Glen Avenue
The eastern northbound lane of Glen Avenue between Huron and Ann streets is scheduled to be closed Sept. 16 and 17 to allow equipment to be delivered and put in place for the new Biomedical Science Research Building. One lane of northbound traffic will be open throughout the work. Questions about this project may be directed to Dan Belanger, Plant Extension project engineer, at (734) 216-3266 or [email protected].
Bonisteel Boulevard
The south side of Bonisteel Boulevard between Murfin and Beal avenues is scheduled to be closed as of Sept.15 as crews begin preparation work to install an underground storm water piping system. Two-way vehicle traffic will be maintained in the northern lanes of Bonisteel throughout the project, which is expected to conclude in early December.
A mid-August start date for this project previously was announced but was changed.
During the lane reduction, the Northbound Commuter transit route will be re-routed north on Murfin and east on Hayward, adding two bus stops—at Murfin and Bonisteel and at Hayward and Beal. The other transit routes will follow scheduled routes and stops.
The underground piping project is designed to help alleviate flooding issues in the North Campus area. Storm water from the piping system will discharge into a naturalized wetland area that will be built during the next year east of the Art and Architecture building.
