David Halberstam, author and journalist, and Bernice Johnson Reagon, musician and historian, will give commencement addresses at graduation ceremonies at the end of this month.
Honorary degrees will be awarded to Halberstam; Reagon; David Hermelin, former U.S. ambassador to Norway; Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter and film director; and Martinus J.G. Veltman, theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate.
Altogether, some 6,000 students on the Ann Arbor campus expect their degrees this spring. Halberstam will give the main speech at the Spring Commencement on April 29 in Michigan Stadium. At this event, beginning at 9:30 a.m., honorary degrees will be conferred and all undergraduate degree candidates will be recognized. Jamie Lynne Katz will make remarks on behalf of the graduating students.
Reagon will be the main speaker at the University Graduate Exercises in Hill Auditorium on April 28. Doctoral candidates and Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies master’s degree candidates will be honored at the ceremony, beginning at 3 p.m. William Ferris, chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities, will receive an honorary degree and deliver the commencement address at U-M-Flint at 2:30 p.m. April 30 at the IMA Sports Arena.

Special Notes
Spring Commencement, Michigan Stadium
Tickets will be distributed 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. April 24–27 in the Michigan Union Pond Room. Bachelor’s degree candidates are eligible for up to eight tickets, and graduate degree candidates, including those participating in the University Graduate Exercises on April 28, are eligible for up to four tickets. ID must be presented.
Extra tickets, if available, will be distributed to graduates and candidates on a first-come, first-served basis 8 a.m.–noon April 28.

Spring Commencement will be in Michigan Stadium regardless of the weather. However, students will receive up to two “rain” tickets for seating in Crisler Arena in case of inclement weather for their relatives and friends who will be able to view the ceremony on large video screens in Crisler.
The Ann Arbor Transportation Authority will run special shuttle buses to the stadium from several Ann Arbor sites.
Coolers, beverages, food, camcorder cases, backpacks, signs, banners, balloons, balls, large camera bags and items mounted on poles are prohibited inside the Stadium.
University Graduate Exercises, Hill Auditorium
Up to six tickets per graduate or candidate will be distributed 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. April 25–26 in the lobby of the Rackham Building. Identification must be presented. Extra tickets, if available, will be distributed 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. April 27 in Room 110, Rackham Building.
A reception will be held on the second floor of the Rackham Building immediately following the Graduate Exercises.
