Happy 175th birthday, U-M.
It was on Aug. 26, 1817, that members of the Michigan territorial government in Detroit signed into law the act that created a “University of Michigania.”
With the start of the 1992–93 academic year, the University begins celebrating the 175th anniversary of its founding. Activities, programs and publications will focus on both the University’s achievements and its mission for the coming century.
Headlining the list of special activities planned for September through May:
—The Presidential Lecture Series on Academic Values, featuring U-M faculty.
—The Presidents Panel, a public conversation with President James J. Duderstadt and former U-M presidents, scheduled Nov. 10.
—Production of a video history of the University.
In addition, a photographic exhibit on the history of the University opens Sept. 18 and continues through Oct. 30 in the Rackham Building. Football programs will feature special articles on U-M history, and the Marching Band will pay a special half-time tribute to the 175th anniversary at the Sept. 19 game.
