As the oldest musical group and student organization on campus, the Men’s Glee Club has had a strong influence both within and without the University of Michigan. Ever since its founding in 1859, Glee Club members have played prominent roles in U-M’s musical scene, including heavily supporting the Michigan Union Opera’s fundraising efforts to build the Union in the early 1900s. The Glee Club has also played ambassador for the university and the United States, garnering international reputation by singing before Queen Juliana of The Netherlands and becoming the first American choir to win the international male choir competition, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod. Its legacy as the second-oldest collegiate chorus in the United States and its pillars of tradition, camaraderie and musical excellence endure to today.
