Eastern Michigan University adds police
In March, six new police officers were sworn in as the Eastern Michigan University Department of Public Safety took another step in its plan to expand off-campus patrols and collaboration with other area law agencies. The addition is part of EMU’s overall plan to hire 10 additional police officers this year to maintain safety operations in place on Eastern’s campus while increasing off-campus oversight.
Grand Valley and Ferris State co-sponsor film festival
Grand Valley State University and Ferris State University are among co-sponsors of the fifth annual Grand Rapids Latin American Film Festival, screening more than a dozen films from April 3-6 at Wealthy Theatre, 1130 Wealthy St. SE, Grand Rapids. All films have English subtitles, and the entire festival is open to the public with free admission. Guests include filmmakers discussing and showing their films.

University of Pennsylvania names athletic director
M. Grace Calhoun has been named director of recreation and intercollegiate athletics at the University of Pennsylvania, effective July 1. The announcement was made March 24 by Provost Vincent Price, who chaired the search committee. Calhoun currently is director of athletics and assistant vice president at Loyola University Chicago, where she has expanded campus partnerships and engagement, opened new facilities, recruited new coaches and enhanced external revenue streams.
University of North Carolina dedicates research facility
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill planned a March 27 dedication of new $245 million research facility Marsico Hall. One of the largest buildings on the UNC campus, it will house basic and translational research across several disciplines. The state’s general assembly provided $243.5 million to construct the building and UNC provided the remaining $1.5 million. The facility is projected to have a significant impact on North Carolina’s economy and UNC’s commitment to scientific discovery.
