Regents approve changes to 2026, 2027 meeting schedules

The Board of Regents approved a series of changes to its meeting schedule for calendar years 2026 and 2027. July meetings have been added, and no scheduled meetings for January are on the updated schedule. Meetings take place at University Hall, Alexander G. Ruthven Building, unless otherwise noted. Visit the Board of Regents’ website for a complete schedule of meetings. 

2026-27 UM-Flint academic calendar approved

The UM-Flint 2026-27 academic calendar was approved by the Board of Regents. The academic year will consist of a total of 69 class days in the fall semester and 67 class days in the winter semester. Fall classes begin Aug. 24 and the winter semester starts Jan. 6.

Retirements

James A. Ashton-Miller, Albert Schultz Collegiate Research Professor, Office of Research; research professor, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, College of Engineering; research professor, School of Kinesiology; and research professor, Institute of Gerontology, Medical School, June 30, 2025. Ashton-Miller received his B.Sc. (Hons.) in mechanical engineering (1972) from the University of Newcastle, U.K., and his M.S.M.E. in mechanical engineering (1974) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He earned his Dr. Philos. (1982) in biomechanics from the University of Oslo. He joined U-M in 1983 as an assistant research scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and rose through the ranks to research professor in 2003. He served as the director of the Biomechanics Research Laboratory (1999-present), the director of the Bone and Joint Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation Center, MedSport, U-M (2010-14), and associate vice president for research (2012-17). His expertise is in biomechanics, with specific interests in unintentional injury. He is a fellow of ASME, AIMBE, GSA and ASB, and served as president of the American Society of Biomechanics (2001). He has earned numerous recognitions, is a co-founder of the U-M Pelvic Floor Research Group, and, as of March 2025, Google Scholar ranked him in the world’s top 25 most widely cited biomechanists. 

Stuart A. Batterman, professor of environmental health sciences and professor of global public health, School of Public Health, Aug. 31, 2025. Batterman earned his B.S. (1979) in environmental sciences from Rutgers University and his M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1986) in civil and environmental engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a visiting scientist at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (1986, 1988, 1990), and assistant professor of environmental and water resources engineering at Texas A&M University (1986-89). He joined U-M as an assistant professor in the School of Public Health (1989), and was promoted to associate professor (1995) and professor of environmental health sciences (2002). Secondary appointments include professor of global public health in SPH and professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering. He directed six training grants at U-M, helped establish the Energy for Sustainability Program at the University of Coimbra, Portugal, while on sabbatical (2006-07), and was engaged in training and research programs internationally. Acknowledgements of his work include two Fulbright Fellowships (Portugal) and an Honorary Professorship (University of KwaZuluNatal). He served on multiple air, water, toxics and lead commissions, including for the cleanup of one of Michigan’s largest Superfund sites (Metamora), and Michigan’s Drinking Water Advisory Council established in the aftermath of the Flint disaster. 

N. Reed Dunnick, professor of radiology, Medical School, Aug. 31, 2025. Dunnick received his B.S. from Purdue University (1965) and Doctor of Medicine from Cornell University (1969). After two clinical years at the University of Rochester, he joined the Public Health Service at the National Institutes of Health. Dunnick took his residency in radiology at Stanford University before returning to the NIH. Next, he was an associate professor at Duke University. In 1992, he came to U-M as a professor and chair of the Department of Radiology. In 1997, he became the Fred Jenner Hodges Professor of Radiology, a title he held until 2018. Dunnick’s research focused on imaging and image-guided intervention in the genitourinary tract. He published more than 300 scientific papers and wrote 10 textbooks. He served on the editorial boards of more than 12 radiology journals, and in 2017 became editor-in-chief of “Academic Radiology.” Dunnick served as president of the Academy of Radiology Research, the American Board of Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Association of University Radiologists, the Radiological Society of North America, the Radiology Research Alliance, the Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, the Society of Computed Body Tomography, and the Society of Uroradiology. He served on more than 45 U-M committees, including three terms on the Medical School Executive Board. 

Rebecca Hardin, associate professor of environment and sustainability, School for Environment and Sustainability, May 31, 2025. Hardin received an A.B. from Brown University (1988) in modern culture and media, then an M.Phil. and Ph.D. in anthropology from Yale University (1994, 2000). She joined Yale as a lecturer in anthropology (2000), then went to the Université Paris, Sorbonne, France as a visiting professor (2001-02). She was appointed assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology and in the School of Environment at McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) in 2002. In 2003, she joined U-M as an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology in LSA and in the School for Natural Resources and Environment (now SEAS). She became an associate professor in SNRE in 2009, where she co-founded and directed a software platform learngala.com, or Gala. Appointed faculty director for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in 2022, Hardin worked with the Community Impact and Engagement team on values-driven organizational change for the school. She advised SEAS and Program in the Environment students since 2008 on the weekly live broadcast “It’s Hot in Here” on WCBN Ann Arbor, 88.3 FM, and she formalized an environmental communications course that leveraged input from her co-leadership of the UM STEM Africa initiative, and her mentorship of U-M Wallace Fellows in journalism. 

Daniel F. Hayes, Stuart B. Padnos Professor of Breast Cancer Research and professor of internal medicine, Medical School, Sept. 30, 2025. Hayes received his A.B. (1974) and M.S. (biochemistry, 1977) from Indiana University and his M.D. from IU School of Medicine (1979). He served his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (1979-82) and his fellowship in medical oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School (1982-85), where he was also on the faculty (1985-96). He was an associate professor at Georgetown University Medical Center (1996-2001), then joined U-M’s Medical School (2001) as professor of internal medicine. He was the inaugural Stuart B. Padnos Professor of Breast Cancer Research (2008) and the Breast Oncology Program clinical director in the Cancer Center (2001-17). He has conducted studies that have changed the practice of breast cancer, particularly in the field of tumor biomarker tests. He was active in the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and served as president (2015-18). He’s authored or co-authored more than 275 peer-reviewed papers, and hosted the podcast “Pioneers in Oncology,” produced by the “Journal of Clinical Oncology,” where he was on the board of directors (2011-14). He won the U-M Medical School Dean’s Outstanding Clinician Award and the Division of Hematology/Oncology’s Teacher of the Year.

Rodney A. Hayward, professor of internal medicine, Medical School, and professor of health management and policy, School of Public Health, Sept. 30, 2025. Hayward earned his A.B. from the University of California, Berkeley (1978) and M.D. from UC, San Diego (1983). He completed his residency in internal medicine at UCLA (1986). He joined the internal medicine faculty at the U-M Medical School as an instructor (1988), and was promoted to assistant professor (1990), associate professor (1994) and professor (1999). He was jointly appointed in SPH, Department of Health Management and Policy (1988). Hayward practiced as a primary care physician concomitant with the clinical instruction and mentorship of medical students and residents (1988-2025). His last 10 years of research have been directed at developing more individualized estimates of treatment risk and benefit to optimize chronic disease management. He served as director and associate director of the U-M Institute of Healthcare Policy & Innovation National Clinicians Scholars program. He also served as director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholars Program (2008-17) and of the Rackham MSc degree program of Health & Health Care Research (2005-23) housed at IHPI. He was the founding director of the Ann Arbor VA Health Services Research & Development Center (1996-2009) and has been a senior investigator there since 2009. 

Peter F. Hitchcock, Skillman Research Professor of Pediatric Ophthalmology, professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences, and of cell and developmental biology, Medical School, Aug. 31, 2025. Hitchcock received his bachelor’s at Michigan State University (1978) and his Ph.D. from the University of Alabama,Birmingham (1983). In 1986, he joined U-M as an assistant research scientist in ophthalmology and visual sciences and assistant professor of anatomy and cell biology. He became a professor (2003) and was appointed the Skillman Research Professorship in Pediatric Ophthalmology (2022). He was also a Fogarty Senior International Research Scholar in London (1997-98) and a Fulbright Research Scholar in Barcelona (2020). Hitchcock taught U-M dental, medical and graduate students, serving as course director in the School of Dentistry and the Medical School, and he received the League of Educational Excellence award. As a developmental neurobiologist and vision scientist, he focused on the retina and its molecular mechanisms. He published more than 81 peer-reviewed articles. and was the associate director and director of the Interdepartmental Neuroscience Graduate Program. He was founding director of the Vision Research Training Program and the Medical School’s Office of Postdoctoral Studies, and the associate dean for academic programs and initiatives at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies for seven years. 

Robert B. Kiningham, clinical professor of family medicine, Medical School, Aug. 31, 2025. Kiningham received his B.S.(biology) from St. Lawrence University (1981). He received an M.A. (exercise physiology) from the University of California at Davis (1984), followed by his M.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (1989). At U-M, he completed a family medicine residency (1989-92) and fellowship in sports medicine (1992-93). He joined the department of family medicine as a lecturer in 1993. He was appointed a clinical assistant professor (1996), promoted to clinical associate professor (2002), and became a clinical professor (2021). He focused on the promotion and safety of physical activity for all ages and skill levels within primary care and sports medicine. He worked with the Michigan High School Athletic Association for more than three decades and developed the Michigan Weight Loss Monitoring Program for high school wrestlers, which was used as the template for programs by both the National Federation of State High School Associations and the National Collegiate Athletic Association. He served as a team physician for both U-M and Eastern Michigan University Athletics, serving as head team physician for EMU Athletics since 2011. In 2015, he received the Founders’ Award from the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

Maria Carmen de Mello Lemos, professor of environment and sustainability, School for Environment and Sustainability; and professor of environment, Program in the Environment, LSA and SEAS, Aug. 31, 2025. Lemos received her B.S. (economics) from the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora in Brazil (1983) and her M.Sc. and Ph.D. (political science) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1990, 1995). After appointments at the University of Arizona, she joined U-M in 2002 as an assistant professor of natural resources and environment, in the School of Natural Resources and Environment, now SEAS, adding a joint appointment in the Program in the Environment in 2003. She was promoted to associate professor (2006), then to professor (2012). Lemos’ research interests are related to climate adaptation and the role of knowledge in building adaptive capacity. She served as co-director of the Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments, SEAS Executive Committee, Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute Executive Committee, Promotion and Tenure committee and, most recently as chair of the SEAS Dean Search Committee, UM Eisenberg Civic Engagement Committee, and associate dean for research and engagement (2015-20). In May 2023, she was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. 

John E. Marcotte, archivist, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, Institute for Social Research, Aug. 4, 2025. Marcotte received his B.J.S. from Northwestern University (1978) and both his M.S. (1984) and his Ph.D. (1988) from the University of Wisconsin. Marcotte joined U-M in 2011 as an archivist in ICPSR at ISR. Since 2017, he has also served as an adjunct clinical instructor in the School of Nursing and has had affiliations at the Michigan Institute for Data Science and the Health Analytics Collaboratory. At ISR, Marcotte served as the principal investigator and project director of Data Sharing for Demographic Research. He also served in a leadership role on the National Archive for Computerized Data on Aging. In addition to leading these two major archival initiatives and numerous related projects, Marcotte served as the director of the restricted data repository for the National Health and Aging Trends Study. He has been a long-time member of the Population Association of American and the American Statistical Association. He served as chair of the PAA’s Computer Advisory Committee, served on numerous review panels at the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health, and is currently co-editor of the journal “JMIRAging.” 

Carol Shannon, senior associate librarian, University Library, June 30, 2025. Shannon earned three degrees from U-M: a Bachelor of Arts (1974), a Master of Arts (1989), and a Master of Public Health (2000). Her career in the University Library began in 2005 as a library assistant in the Dentistry Library. In her role as Taubman Health Sciences Library’s information services specialist (2006-11), Shannon presented workshops on citation management tools, supervised School of Information students’ development of instructional materials, and developed tutorials to support the use of instructional technologies. She was appointed informationist in 2011. She worked with student teams on impactful projects, including development of online tutorials for point-of-need instruction and user experience and design recommendations for the Plain Language Medical Dictionary development team, which received the Medical Library Association’s Jean Williams Sayre Innovation Award in 2010 and Frank Bradway Rogers Information Advancement Award in 2013. Her contributions to the university include serving on the Faculty Senate’s Medical Affairs Advisory Committee (2022-25), the School of Public Health’s Reaccreditation Task Force (2017-20), and the Health Equity Leadership Pipeline Collaborative (2016-19). Shannon also impacted the broader health sciences library community through exceptional service to the Midwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association (2008-25). 

Jocelyn E. Wiggins, clinical professor of internal medicine, Medical School, Sept. 30, 2025. Wiggins received her B.A. (1970) and both her M.A. and B.M., B.Ch. (1972) from Oxford University in England. She completed her residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at Middlesex Hospital Medical School in London, England (1975, 1976). She emigrated to the U.S. in 1976 and joined the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine at U-M as a fellow in 1995. Wiggins was appointed as a clinical lecturer (1997), clinical assistant professor (2003), clinical associate professor (2009) and clinical professor (2014). She has served as both service chief and associate division chief for the Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine. Wiggins has specialized in the care of older patients with kidney disease, including those requiring dialysis and transplantation. She has published in both nephrology and geriatric journals. She taught a national class for nephrology providers on the special needs and the management challenges of their older patients. She has been the principal investigator for multiple National Institutes of Health clinical trials.
