A new hub for artificial intelligence research and collaboration will soon launch at the University of Michigan, aiming to strengthen the university’s role in AI and improve coordination among its researchers and external partners.
The AI Institutes at Michigan advances the university’s Vision 2034 goal to “expand the development and deployment of artificial intelligence and data science” over the next decade. It will be funded through resources dedicated to Vision 2034 initiatives.

“Whether in medicine, engineering, social sciences or the arts, AI is accelerating our ability to discover, understand and innovate,” said Arthur Lupia, interim vice president for research and innovation. “It is allowing our researchers to analyze vast amounts of data, develop innovative solutions and push the limits of possibility. In support of Vision 2034, the University of Michigan is poised to lead the robust scholarly and applied fields of artificial intelligence and to make AI a force for the greater good.”
In addition to advancing technology and promoting discovery, AIIM will better position the university to secure top-tier talent and funding through grants and philanthropic giving, Lupia said.
“Through AIIM, we will leverage existing strengths, foster new partnerships and attract the brightest minds to Michigan,” he said. “We will be seen as a trusted partner and an essential leader in shaping how AI can best save lives, create opportunity and improve quality of life.”
AIIM is expected to launch in April and will bring together experts from multiple disciplines to work on theoretical, experimental and applied investigations of AI, offering incentives for greater collaboration and effectiveness. Goals include not only fostering an environment where innovative ideas can thrive, but also further establishing U-M as a global leader in the field, influencing policy, ethical standards and the future direction of AI technology.
AIIM will extend efforts currently underway at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, E-Health & Artificial Intelligence, the Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering, the Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society, and the Quantum Research Institute.
“Artificial intelligence is a revolutionary technology that is transforming our world and driving innovation that will benefit society in innumerable ways, which is why it is a critical component of our university’s strategic vision,” said President Santa J. Ono. “AIIM will help us advance the University of Michigan’s public research mission and push the boundaries of what is possible.”
