Voices of the Staff is inviting University of Michigan staff members to join as the program marks 20 years of sharing ideas and defining the issues that matter most to the campus community.

In that time more than 1,000 volunteers have played a pivotal role in creating a better workplace, contributing to impactful initiatives such as the adoption of a floating holiday.

The deadline to apply is March 31.

With six network teams focused on key areas such as career development, enhancing employee experience and embracing change, Voices provides a valuable opportunity for staff to influence the university’s growth and development heading into 2025.

“Our staff are the backbone of the university, and their contributions are essential to driving meaningful change,” said Dyan Jenkins Ali, assistant director of Voices of the Staff. “Voices provides a platform for impactful and rewarding experiences, and participating in it is not only influential but also incredibly social but engaging, too.”

Over the years, Voices has been integral to advancing the university’s mission.

“Voices has given me opportunities to be creative, take chances, and speak up in order to fully contribute to the University of Michigan’s mission,” said Susan Zill, a registered nurse at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital.

Dan Rife, director of facilities and operations for LSA and a longtime Voices contributor, noted that “Voices has helped shift my focus from my personal growth to helping those around me grow at the university.”

As the program kicks off its 20th anniversary celebrations, staff are encouraged to apply and help shape the university’s future while benefiting from enriching personal and professional growth experiences.

Key achievements of Voices include:

  • Helping create the Career Development Fund for Staff.
  • Contributing to the adoption of the new floating holiday.
  • Producing events for the DEI Summit.
  • Recommending the creation of a staff ombuds.
  • Proposing the establishment of a parking office in University Hospital South.
