The new year will bring an added perk for faculty and staff. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, employees will enjoy one day each calendar year as a paid floating holiday.
The additional day off is available to benefits-eligible, regular non-bargained-for faculty and staff on all campuses including Michigan Medicine. Faculty and staff covered by a collective bargaining agreement should consult their contract regarding eligibility for the new holiday.

The new benefit allows faculty and staff to designate a floating holiday day, with approval from their supervisor or department, to celebrate the holiday or special occasion of their choice each year. The holiday must be used by the end of each calendar year. If not used, the paid day off will not roll over to the next year.
“Providing the flexibility for employees to choose their own holiday recognizes the diversity of our faculty and staff community,” said Rich Holcomb, associate vice president for human resources.
“Conversations with members of Voices of the Staff have underscored the desire we have heard from many employees to celebrate holidays or special personal events of their choosing which may not be recognized as university holidays.
“This new benefit also supports the U-M Well-Being Collective and our efforts toward being a health-promoting campus. It allows individuals to prioritize the occasions of greatest significance to them.”
