U-M aims for $1.25M in annual United Way campaign

The annual University of Michigan United Way campaign kicked off Oct. 16 with a goal of $1.25 million.

Earlier this year, the United Way of Washtenaw County merged with the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, bringing new opportunities to grow resources and maximize efficiency, and allowing the combined organizations to have even more impact throughout Washtenaw County.

Donations still will be allocated to the local organizations that contributors have supported for many years.

The campaign co-chairs — Alfreda Rooks, director of community health services for U-M Health, and Chris Kolb, vice president for government relations — are asking U-M community members to lend their continued support with a pledge to the campaign by Dec. 31.

“The United Way campaign is an exciting opportunity for U-M faculty, staff and retirees to pool their resources to continue to make a huge impact on those in the community who need it the most,” Kolb said. “Last year, the campaign raised more than $1.13 million, exceeding our goal.”

Pledges to the campaign will be invested through United Way for Southeastern Michigan and its community impact partners that support the priority areas of health, education and financial stability, or a nonprofit of the donor’s choice.

“We want to continue to inspire our U-M faculty, staff and retirees to do much more this year through a pledge to the campaign,” Rooks said. “With increased support, there will be more programs and services for our neighbors in need and a stronger community.”

Pledges can be made through the secure ePledge system at the United Way for Southeastern Michigan website or through Wolverine Access, or via a pledge form that is available at uway.umich.edu.

Donors who give $1,000 or more become members of the Leadership Givers Association and will receive an invitation to an annual reception hosted by President Santa J. Ono in early 2024.
