Don’t miss: Information architecture expert returns to U-M

Louis Rosenfeld, called the father of information architecture — the structuring of information online for easy use — will speak Oct. 25 on “Beyond User Research.”

This Rackham Centennial Alumni Lecture at 4:30 p.m. in the Michigan Union Anderson Room is sponsored by his alma mater, the School of Information. Rosenfeld, who earned a master’s in information and library science degree in 1990, is co-author of “Information Architecture for the World Wide Web,” with School of Information graduate Peter Morville. He is principal of Louis Rosenfeld LLC, an information architecture consultancy, and founded Rosenfeld Media.

While user research becomes established in organizations around the world, Rosenfeld says it “remains narrow in focus, often limited to the methods and tools that reflect our own educational biases, and approaches that fit within our own comfort zones.” He will explore complementary aspects of different research perspectives, argue for breaking down divisions, and suggest a framework for developing better products and services.

A reception follows at 5:30 p.m. in the University Club.

Ecoentrepreneur and broadcaster speaks at Hill Auditorium

Majora Carter, host of the Peabody Award-winning radio show “The Promised Land” and urban revitalization strategist, will present the lecture “Home(town) Security” at 5 p.m. Thursday at Hill Auditorium.

Carter mobilized a South Bronx community to restore natural environments when few were talking about sustainability, let alone in the South Bronx. Since 2003, she has created a nonprofit and a consulting company that helps communities nationwide bring environmental change. Her non-profit trains individuals with eco skills, and has brought jobs to these areas.

In her talk, she will illustrate how people can bring about environmental changes in their communities. Sponsors include more than a dozen units on campus, including the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Erb Institute, Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute, and several LSA units.
