Shirley Verrett Award ceremony

Glenda Dickerson, professor of theatre at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, is the inaugural Shirley Verrett Award winner. The annual award, established by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost, honors the legacy of internationally acclaimed opera singer Shirley Verrett, who also was the James Earl Jones Distinguished University Professor of Voice in the School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
On Nov. 6 a tribute and award ceremony will honor Verrett’s career, as well as celebrate Dickerson for her dedication to promoting the success of women of color students and faculty in the creative arts and for her commitment to diversity as part of the university’s mission.
As tribute to Verrett’s four decades-long career, the ceremony will feature performances by two of her former students, Kimberly Haynes and Kimberley Dolanski, as well as a video of Verrett’s performances. Colleagues, friends and family also will share their memories of the impact Verrett had both on her students and on her fans and admirers worldwide.
The ceremony takes place 3:30 p.m. at Stamps Auditorium in the Walgreen Drama Center on North Campus. A reception will follow.
