Indecent exposure suspect arrested
A 34-year-old citizen of Mexico was arraigned last week on multiple indecent exposure charges in connection with a series of incidents near the southern end of campus in early October. Martimiano Zuniga Salazar is being held in the Washtenaw County Jail on a no-bond immigration detainer. He was arraigned Oct. 9 on four counts of aggravated indecent exposure along with sentence enhancements related to indecent exposure by a sexually delinquent person. Two charges were connected with incidents reported on campus Sept. 29 and Oct. 4, and the other two charges for incidents that were reported in city’s jurisdiction. On Oct. 8 the Department of Public Safety (DPS) canceled a crime alert that had been issued Oct. 4 regarding these incidents. Police continue to seek additional witnesses to these or other similar incidents.
Home invasion suspects remain at large
Police are searching for a white male and two white females wanted in connection with at least four residence hall room burglaries in early September. No similar incidents have been reported to DPS since the alert was issued.
Two fights reported at football game
Two men were arrested Sept. 15 at Michigan Stadium in unrelated assault incidents. Both men were processed and released pending warrant authorization from the county prosecutor’s office.
A 20-year-old student was arrested after he reportedly brandished a pair of brass knuckles and used them to swing at another student with whom he was disagreeing over a seat. The victim was not seriously injured in the altercation. The brass knuckles are considered a concealed weapon and possession of them could be a violation of state law. The suspect was arrested for assault with a dangerous weapon.
In the second incident, a 21-year-old Notre Dame student was arrested after he reportedly pushed a 24-year-old visitor from behind with enough force that the victim fell and struck his face on the ground. The two reportedly had been engaged in heated verbal taunting leading up to the assault.
Computers stolen from Taubman Library
A 25-year-old man awaits trial on charges he broke into the Taubman Medical Library Sept. 25 and stole several computers. Scott Matthews remains in jail on charges of burglary and larceny more than $20,000. His bond was set at $25,000 cash.
Police arrested Matthews Sept. 27 when he was found in a Van Buren Township hotel in possession of computers that were traced back to the Taubman burglary. A library door window had been broken to gain access. DPS has identified a second suspect and is continuing the investigation.
Sexual assault reported
A 19-year-old Northwood Housing resident told police Sept. 8 that she was sexually assaulted by a man she met at an off-campus party. She said she invited the man, a visitor from New York, to spend the night at her apartment. Later she awoke as he allegedly assaulted her, she told police. The prosecutor’s office declined authorizing charges against the man and the case has been closed.
