Renovated nuclear reactor building opens as world-class labs

More than a decade after the Ford Nuclear Reactor shut down for the last time, the building returned to life Monday as the Nuclear Engineering Laboratory.

Inside it, researchers in the nation's top-ranked nuclear engineering program will focus on advancing nuclear security, nonproliferation, safety and energy.

$12M renovation begins at U-M's nuclear engineering labs

After more than a decade of carefully dismantling U-M's nuclear reactor and clearing the building of radiation, the university initiated the facility’s second life as the Nuclear Engineering Laboratory on Thursday with a "wallbreaking" ceremony to kick off construction.
