    ‘The ’60s began’ at U-M: How students helped JFK change world

    Alan Guskin, a 23-year-old Michigan graduate student when he stood in front of the Michigan Union at 2 a.m. Oct. 14, 1960, will be back at the Union at 2 a.m. this Oct. 14, speaking to a crowd celebrating the 50th anniversary of JFK's speech that would lead to the creation of the Peace Corps. Guskin will detail how he and other students and faculty took action: writing letters, organizing groups, conducting petition drives, building momentum so the Peace Corps would be established by executive order on March 1, 1961.

    University crafting plan to reward good health

    Large employers across the country are looking for health plans that provide effective ways to encourage employees to stay healthy, reduce their risks and manage chronic conditions. Often, they share in the financial savings by getting reduced premium rates while they improve their health. Associate Vice President for Human Resources Laurita Thomas charged a committee with crafting a plan that provides these types of incentives, and it could be offered as soon as 2012.
