    U-M sustainability efforts showcased at EarthFest

    For two days last week, U-M faculty, staff and students took part in EarthFest 2010: A Party for the Planet. The event featured a trash sort to identify recyclable items, entertainment, informational displays and a chance to sign a sustainability pledge.

    Top businesses, URC partner to boost state’s economic growth

    Business Leaders for Michigan and the University Research Corridor  have formed Accelerate Michigan to help support efforts to make Michigan a “top 10” state for economic growth. Based on benchmarking performed by McKinsey & Co., the alliance will become one of the largest of its kind between a state’s largest businesses and research universities. U-M is part of the URC along with Michigan State and Wayne State universities.

    U-M, MSU to lead $4.2 million Great Lakes climate change initiative

    U-M and Michigan State University jointly will lead a federally funded effort to help Great Lakes-region residents anticipate and adapt to climate change. The interdisciplinary effort will be funded by a five-year, $4.2 million grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

    Freshman weight gain: Women with heavy roommates gain less

    A new U-M study finds that college women with roommates who weigh more than average gain less weight during their freshman year than women with slimmer roommates: half a pound versus 2.5 pounds. That compares to the typical freshman weight gain of 2.5-to-6 pounds — much less than the mythical “Freshman 15.”
