    IT Council recommends use of Google collaboration tools

    The IT Council unanimously has recommended the selection of Google as the primary collaboration tool provider for U-M students, staff and faculty. The recommendation now will be considered by the IT Executive Committee for a final decision.

    Short-term counseling services provide insight

    If you’re troubled about a family, job or personal concern and have considered counseling, you’re not alone. Last year about 600 individuals received help through the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program, which serves the main campus, and hundreds more have called with questions about the program, says Director Thomas Waldecker. Similarly, counseling is available to U-M Health System faculty and staff through the UMHS Employee Assistance Program.

    Simple small molecules could untangle Alzheimer’s disease

    New molecular tools developed at U-M show promise for “cleansing” the brain of amyloid plaques, implicated in Alzheimer’s disease. The research, led by assistant professor Mi Hee Lim, was published online Dec. 3 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

    Nonprofits aiding the sick or poor could increase charitable donations through ads in which consumers empathize with an actor portraying an unfortunate plight. A new study by researchers at U-M, Westminster College and University of North Carolina looks at observers’ reaction to a poor woman’s emotions when asking for assistance.
