    Patent insights

    ‘We Want a Veto’

    The International Institute’s annual photo contest offers a window onto the unique places where students affiliated with the institute and its 17 centers and programs have gone to intern and study abroad the previous year. This photo by Matt Harmon, titled “We Want a Veto,” took first place in the Not Just a Tourist category. “Warsaw erupted when its government almost passed a bill that would put the Polish Supreme Court under government control. The people did not stay silent,” Harmon said.

    When China formally announced plans to establish a national carbon market in December, it was double the European Union’s carbon market and 10 times the size of California’s cap-and-trade system.     Abstract Ancestry

    For his solo show “Abstract Ancestry: Machine-Works on Paper,” Detroit-based artist Matthew Angelo Harrison ​will produce a suite of mechanical drawings with his homemade 3-D printer. In this video, Harrison, the Institute for the Humanities’ Efroymson Emerging Artist in Residence, discusses his work, including new drawings that people can watch being made during the span of the exhibition, which runs through May 11 at the Institute for the Humanities Gallery, 202 S. Thayer.

Molly Fausone, a third-year U-M medical student paralyzed from the chest down with limited use of her hands, uses a special device that helps her overcome these basic obstacles.
