What is public health?

The School of Public Health recently launched a video series called “What Is Public Health?” Each brief video simplifies an essential public health concept. This video introduces the basic concept of public health, while subsequent videos look at environmental health science and social determinants of health.

Hoops and wheels

Players reach for the ball during Saturday’s Army-Navy Wheelchair Basketball Game. Teams consisting of Paralympians, ROTC cadets, student veterans and local veterans took to the Crisler Center court for the annual contest, which organizers said is designed to “emphasize the ‘ability’ within ‘disability,’” and honor veterans and active-duty military, especially student veterans. Lifelike human relative

Australopithecus sediba, an extinct relative of humans that roamed southern Africa 2 million years ago, is settling into her home at the new U-M Museum of Natural History in the new Biological Sciences Building. This video previews the life-size, hyper-realistic sculptural reconstruction of A. sediba in the museum’s “Evolution: Life Through Time” gallery. Museum visitors will get their first glimpse of the diminutive hominid when the relocated museum opens to the public April 14.

Smart wearables

Simple, wearable sensing technology can give seniors a louder voice in identifying stressors in their physical environment and arm communities with information to help address infrastructure needs. In this video, U-M researchers and students discuss how they’re putting those sensors to work with residents of an Ypsilanti senior center to gauge the technology’s effectiveness.

Super Abbu

Pakistan ranks among the worst in the world for infant and maternal mortality with 52 deaths per 1,000 live births. To change this, Mustafa Naseem, clinical assistant professor of information, wants to bring information about pregnancy and child care directly to fathers. In this video, he discusses his Super Abbu project, a public phone service in Pakistan that aims to improve infant and maternal health outcomes through educating fathers on pregnancy and child care.

Public engagement honorees

President Mark Schlissel presented this year’s President’s Awards for Public Engagement at an event Thursday. Joseph Ryan, professor in the School of Social Work, received the President’s Award for Public Impact. Rosina Bierbaum, professor in the School for Environment and Sustainability, received the President’s Award for National and State Leadership. Milestone in movement

Across Michigan, children born with Down syndrome are walking three to six months earlier, thanks to researchers at the School of Kinesiology. This video shows how just minutes a day on a tot-sized treadmill can lead to the crucial life milestone, a development that has touched hundreds of children in and outside the state.

Restoring Union glory

A worker for Full Spectrum Stained Glass puts the finishing touches on a restored window from the Michigan Union. The Colon, Michigan, restoration company has been working since August to painstakingly strip, repair and restore 540 windows that are part of the Union renovation project, which also includes 1,150 individual sashes, 5,218 leaded glass panels and 21,528 individual pieces of glass. Prisoner art

The Prison Creative Arts Project presents the 24th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners, one of the largest prison exhibitions in the world, from March 20 to April 3. In this video, Graham Hamilton, the PCAP arts programming coordinator, discusses the project, which highlights the work of 574 artists from 26 facilities in Michigan.

Student Day of Thanks to write postcards and personal thank you messages to U-M alumni who made gifts of $50 or less to the university in the past year.
