    Hearing health

    Using the new Apple Research app, Rick Neitzel, associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the School of Public Health, has partnered with Apple to study sound exposure and its impact on hearing health. Using a person’s iPhone and Apple Watch to measure levels of sound exposure, the study will explore the effects of sound on hearing, stress, and cardiovascular health. In this video, Neitzel explains how this groundbreaking study will advance our understanding of how hearing could be impacted over time by exposure to sound at certain levels.

    Putting it together

    The School of Music, Theatre & Dance has more than 150 faculty members teaching and mentoring 1,100 students in the performing arts. More than 900 performances and events are presented by SMTD each year, including student and faculty recitals, concerts, musicals and plays, and more. This video shows the preparations for and staff involvement with costumes, makeup and hair.

    Earth Camp

    As concerns about the environment grow, different perspectives are needed to address these issues in all communities. Every summer for three years in a row, a diverse group of Michigan high school students spends a week exploring nature and learning about the environment through an Earth Camp provided by the U-M Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The camp hopes to spark interest among a new generation to enter the field. In this video, students and U-M officials associated with Earth Camp discuss its benefits.

The event offered employees an opportunity to look back on their success at Michigan Medicine, reconnect with colleagues from across the organization and be recognized for their decades-long commitment.     Diving for discovery

    Some researchers sport lab coats. David Sherman prefers a wetsuit. The U-M medicinal chemist and avid scuba diver travels the world in search of marine microorganisms to help pioneer new antibiotics, anticancer drugs and other medicines. Sherman is the Hans W. Vahlteich Professor of Medicinal Chemistry, professor of medicinal chemistry, College of Pharmacy; professor of microbiology and immunology, Medical School; professor of chemistry, LSA; and research professor, Life Sciences Institute. This video explores Sherman’s work, some of the places he’s visited and how the microorganisms are used to create new drugs.

    Harp at U-M

    Joan Holland is a clinical associate professor of music, teaching the harp at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. Along with her position on the U-M faculty she is resident harpist and instructor of harp at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and performs with several Michigan orchestras.     Body-sensing kirigami

    College of Engineering researchers have built a kirigami-inspired sensor that can form to different parts of the human body. In this video, Max Shtein, professor of materials science and engineering, and Erin Evke, a materials science and engineering Ph.D. candidate, explain how the device could help with athletic training and injury recovery by actively measuring range of motion of complex joints, such as the shoulder or knee.
