The new LSA Building

The new LSA Building, featuring a glass-walled addition, opening earlier this month. U.S.-Iranian relations

Analyzing the Amazon

Valeriy Ivanov, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, started as a coder before traveling to Brazil for hands-on field research in Tapajós National Forest. The Amazon is a challenging environment, but the data he and other researchers gather is essential to understanding life and climate change in the rainforest, and around the world. In this video, Ivanov discusses the importance of the work and the difficulty of transitioning from the field to the office.

Making their way

Merging goals, dreams, ideas and inspiration with parts, pieces, productivity and creativity is what the Brightmoor Maker Space in northwest Detroit is all about. It’s a decade-long collaboration between Nick Tobier, professor of art and design at the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, and Bart Eddy, founder of Detroit Community School. In this video, Tobier and Eddy talk about what goes on at the space and how it affects the surrounding community.

Angela Davis delivers MLK keynote

Activist, scholar and author Angela Davis delivered the 34th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium keynote memorial lecture on Jan. 20. Speaking to a packed Hill Auditorium, Davis said, “I think it is important for us to learn how to pay tribute to those whose names we don’t necessarily know, and to recognize that the agents of history are not so much the leaders and the spokespeople, but rather the masses of people who develop a collective imagination regarding the possibility for a new future.”

WHOOO’s the winner?

This photo by graduate student John David Curlis, titled “A family of camouflage” and showing the natural hiding abilities of great horned owls, took first place in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology’s 2019 Photographer at Large Contest. “I cannot emphasize enough how much luck went into actually photographing them,” Curlis said of his winning photo, which was taken in Ann Arbor’s Island Park. Teaching biodiversity
