Rise Up

Mott Children’s Hospital put together a heartfelt musical tribute. The video involves the therapists singing “Rise Up” by Andra Day and playing instruments, and also includes spoken messages from pediatric patients, child life specialists and other Michigan Medicine team members who sent in video clips.

Protecting workers
Read more about these two new devicesTreating patients with COVID-19 means health care workers are putting their own health and safety on the line each day. Now, two new devices, dubbed Aerosolve, could offer additional safety for health care workers, while allowing more effective treatment of patients with infections spread by respiratory droplets. In this video, researchers from U-M’s Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care describe the devices they designed: a portable negative-pressure helmet and a portable negative-pressure procedural tent.

‘Blossom’ speaks volumes
See the winners and the As I See It photo competition submissionsArts at Michigan’s latest photography contest has ended, and “Blossom” has been voted the winner. The theme for the competition was “sound,” and this photo by Anders Lundin, an undergraduate studying art and design, was voted tops by the U-M community. Competitions take place periodically throughout the year, with different themes and media for each round.

‘Four Years in Blue’
Read more about the medical students’ journeyIn 2016, the University of Michigan Medical School welcomed 172 new doctors-in-training. Out of this group, 15 students agreed to be followed throughout all four years of their medical training, documenting key milestones in their journeys from the first months on campus until just days before graduation for most of them. In this short film, they tell their stories in their own words with glimpses into the reality of med school life as they lived it.

Plasma jet wands

Helping, learning in Kenya
Read more about this effort to improve dental care in KenyaU-M faculty and students in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy and engineering are part of a cross-disciplinary partnership working together for a decade to improve health care around the state of Meru in Kenya. Before the coronavirus pandemic reached Kenya, 30 U-M students immersed themselves in a learning and service journey to the east African country. This video explains how the dental students taught older students proper dental hygiene, which they passed along to younger students in an area where dentists are rare.

This spring, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the historic peony garden will bloom without visitors. In this video, Bob Grese, director of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum, asks people to skip their annual visit and explains how to enjoy the bloom virtually.
