    Morality in crises

    Wild stock market gyrations and runs on toilet paper as well as other home goods might seem like acts spurred by financial and economic fear and panic. But Paolo Pasquariello, professor of finance in the Stephen M. Ross School of Business, sees such reactions as rational — if not always ethical — in a time of a global pandemic.     Staying safe out there

    As U-M settles into new work routines built around COVID-19 restrictions, many people are working remotely while others still must come to campus to perform their critical functions. For anyone who needs to go out, the precautions to fend off the coronavirus are crucial. In this video, Robert Ernst, executive director of the University Health Service, reiterates the social distancing and personal hygiene steps everyone should take, along with exhibiting a heightened sense of awareness of one’s surroundings.

    Golden Apple surprise

    Lorenzo Garcia-Amaya, assistant professor of Spanish linguistics in LSA and co-director of the Speech Production Lab, was in the middle of the first virtual lab meeting when surprise visitors joined. They were from the Golden Apple Award committee and joined the BlueJeans meeting to inform Garcia-Amaya he was the 30th recipient of the award, a moment captured in this video.

    Science at a social distance

    Because of travel restrictions and other COVID-19 precautions, U-M researchers had to shift a National Science Foundation-funded workshop in Russia about climate research to a remote tele-workshop. In this video, Tyeen Taylor, a civil and environmental engineering research fellow at U-M who is organizing the workshop, and Valeriy Ivanov, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, talk about the transition of making the international workshop digital.

    Hoarding ‘normal’ in crises

    The COVID-19 pandemic has rampantly heightened stress and anxiety during these uncertain times, leading some to hoard groceries such as toilet paper, eggs, meats, bread and hand sanitizer. In this video, Stephanie Preston, a behavioral neuroscientist in the Department of Psychology, explains that hoarding is a normal behavior, but people need to be sure they aren’t doing it for the wrong reasons.

    Match Day reimagined

    On March 20, 173 U-M medical students excitedly read their letter revealing where they have been accepted for residency training. But this time, due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings, the annual Match Day happened electronically. At noon, each student received online notification — instead of the traditional envelope. Students shared their excitement in real-time via the Medical School Twitter and Instagram accounts, and a special YouTube playlist.

In this video, U-M Athletic Director Warde Manuel and coaches Jim Harbaugh, Juwan Howard and Carol Hutchins join Michigan State University Athletic Director Bill Beekman and coaches Tom Izzo, Suzy Merchant and Mel Tucker to encourage fans to practice social distancing, handwashing, and other preventative behaviors to address COVID-19 and coronavirus concerns.
