    Business vs. government

    It’s no secret that business pokes its head into policymaking and government mingles in the market. What surprised Andy Hoffman, professor of management and organizations, and environment and sustainability, was how little the relationships between them and their influences upon each other were being covered in business schools. That led him to create Business in Democracy: Advocacy, Lobbying, and Public Interest, a graduate-level course at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. In this video, discusses the importance of cooperation between business and government.

    MESL making UM-Dearborn safer

    Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, UM-Dearborn’s Manufacturing Systems Engineering Lab has become a small factory to support campus reopening plans. In particular, the team cranks out made-to-order, clear plastic barriers, like the one pictured at this temperature-check station.     Surveillance testing

    The U-M COVID-19 Community Sampling and Tracking program launched Sept. 3. The purpose of the opt-in, voluntary program is to monitor levels of COVID-19 in the community of people who are symptomatic and to help U-M better target interventions. In this video, Emily Martin, associate professor of epidemiology , who is guiding the development of the surveillance testing program, describes its intent.

    New health plan: Michigan Care

    Employees and retirees will have an additional health plan choice during Open Enrollment for 2021 benefits, from Oct. 19-30. The university will add Michigan Care, a new managed-care plan similar to U-M Premier Care, to the available options. This video provides highlights. Because of a narrow provider network, access to the plan will be limited to those who live in a specific geographic area in Southeast Michigan.

    Virus in the environment

    Studying samples from sewers, wiping down classrooms and buses, and taking measurements of air. Researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health are performing these tasks to determine how much coronavirus is present in the environment on campus, and whether that has any relationship on COVID-19 infection rates within the university community.
